Volkswagen has supercharged its in-car voice assistant, transforming it into a conversational companion powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This upgrade, first hinted at during CES, brings ChatGPT’s advanced natural language capabilities to VW’s latest vehicles, including the Jetta and electric models.
Rather than a full overhaul, Volkswagen’s integration of ChatGPT builds upon its existing voice assistant, Ida, by partnering with Cerence’s Chat Pro platform. Cerence, a long-time collaborator with VW on voice AI, helps enhance the in-car experience by making interactions far more engaging than just handling basic navigation or climate control. ChatGPT’s AI extends the assistant’s reach, allowing users to get localized recommendations, play trivia, or ask more complex questions, all while on the road.
A More Natural and Interactive Experience
Drivers can now activate the assistant with familiar commands like “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen,” depending on their car model. If Ida cannot handle a request on its own, it connects to the cloud via Cerence Chat Pro, which processes queries using multiple databases, including ChatGPT. This cloud-based system makes the assistant more conversational, flexible, and capable of answering a wider array of questions.
Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We are honored to collaborate with Volkswagen in order to provide their drivers with instant benefits as they seek to take use of generative AI while driving. The IDA voice assistant has more knowledge, skills, and value than before because to these new features, which will only become better. They also make travel safer and more pleasurable.”
Privacy and Security Focus
Volkswagen has made sure to address concerns about privacy and data security. The automaker assures that sensitive vehicle data is not accessed by the AI, and that all session data is erased after each use. This focus on privacy will be crucial as AI becomes a larger part of everyday driving.
Availability and Subscription
Most 2025 Volkswagen models will include a free trial of the AI-powered voice assistant as part of VW’s Car-Net system. Afterward, it may be offered as part of the Plus Speech with AI subscription, giving drivers access to the enhanced voice capabilities over time. As ChatGPT becomes more embedded in Volkswagen’s vehicles, the automaker could expand its usage without requiring additional subscriptions.
Volkswagen Leading the AI Race
Voice assistants in cars have become increasingly common, but VW’s use of ChatGPT aims to set it apart from competitors. As more automakers, like Mercedes-Benz, explore integrating generative AI models into their systems, Volkswagen hopes its early adoption will attract tech-savvy customers.
In the words of Kai Grünitz, a member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management: “Volkswagen has a long history of bringing technology to the masses. We enable widespread access to these technologies as a volume manufacturer. We are demonstrating how creative our solutions are by allowing drivers to utilize this artificial intelligence on a daily basis through the seamless integration of ChatGPT into the voice assistant’s backend.”
This move positions Volkswagen as a pioneer in enhancing in-car user experience through conversational AI, potentially setting a new standard for vehicle voice assistants in the automotive industry.
By making ChatGPT a part of their infotainment systems, VW aims to deliver more intuitive, natural conversations between drivers and their cars, raising the bar for in-vehicle AI capabilities
